This starter can be used almost as a diagnostic assessment to gauge how much students already know, and a fun ice breaker.
Pose the question with a PowerPoint:
Give the students a few minutes to think and discuss their answers in groups. Tell them "it's not as simple as you'd think"
then tell them to watch what an elementary student would say if asked "why does it rain?" and show them the clip.
Then actually try and explain some of the truth of it all, which will include the following key vocabulary:
